Hi Bob

I have lived in Wells most of my life, and my husband Pete is also a native of the town. He used to fish for whelks, and among those he crewed for were David Cox and the late Alan Cox, who was Pete's uncle.

A qualified teacher, I taught at Wells CP School from 1974 - 1979, and again from 1982 - 1984.

Going back further in time, in my early teens I sang in the St. Nicholas church choir and also played the organ. In the good old days of Wells Cinema I worked as an usherette, whilst at Grammar School in the 1960's (now the 6th Form College) in Fakenham, and also in the bakery in Staithe Street when it was owned by Mr. Auld and managed by Ruth Smith.

My focus now is on helping others through Breast Cancer. I had this disease in 2000 and, after the mastectomy and all the chemo and radiotherapy, I wrote the book 'Courage, Brave Amazon' in order to spread a message of hope to sufferers. The book is now on Cancer Research UK's recommended reading list, and is being used by medics as a resource for women who find it difficult to cope with their diagnosis. My website, offering support, counselling and friendship to sufferers of this disease, was designed and created by our daughter Lucy, as her contribution to this cause. I can be contacted through the site at:

and I will be very happy to hear from any old friends from the town, especially those who attended Wells CP School as pupils from 1957 - 1963. Does anyone out there remember Miss Kilvington, the first-year infant teacher?

Many thanks,

Christine (Chrissie) Rayner
